Save the Mermaids!
State of Florida Buys Weeki Wachee
Back in 1977, my folks drove me and my brothers down to Florida to our vacation. Just north of St. Pete, where my grandparents had just purchased their retirement home, was the folk-tastic Weeki Wachee park. A roadside attraction par-excellance.
Threatened with closure, Florida decided to step in a preserve this unique part of its history.
Good for them.

I'm Trapped in Las Vegas
Send Help!
Just wrapped up a conference and board or directors meeting in Las Vegas. Nice town, in small doses. But I've been here a week, and I think I'm losing it. The Venetian is a nice hotel with giant, plush rooms. It is also ginormous. The walk from my room to the meeting space is longer than the walk from my house to the subway (about 3/4 of a mile) and it is all indoors! Amazing.
The Venetian also hosts a permanent "Phantom of the Opera" show. They promote it by playing the soundtrack constantly in the public areas. If I hear "Music of the Night" one more time...

Tourist Time!
Welcome to DC!
It's cherry blossom time and the trees are in full bloom. The city is awash in be-fanny-packed hoards trampling all that get in their way. I say, Welcome to Washington! Please spend lots of money, we need it. Also, if you are using our metro rail system, please stand to the right on the escalators (on ones that work that is).
The good news is that despite the crowds, the metro system (which is sadly showing its age) seems to be functioning well. No meltdowns yet as with a few years ago when passengers refused to leave a broken down train due to massive delays. That's good I suppose.
