Timing is Everything!

Is the whole Sandy Berger memo thing a scandal? I'm not sure, the stories I've read so far make Berger sound lame and inept, but as we know the Democrats don't have a monopoly on ineptness. What is interesting to Elephant is the timing of the Berger story.  According to several news accounts it is being reported that:

Berger, [who] has been the subject of an investigation since October

Hmmmm....The government has know about this since October, yet the story breaks the same week as the 9/11 commission report is released. So now the story becomes what was Berger doing or thinking rather than the substance of the commissions report. Politics as usual.

I've narrowed down the identity of the elusive Precarious Pacheyderm!

1. George Stephanopoulos:
"Part of it is that it's about the war on terror; part of it is Sandy Berger's position in the [Kerry] campaign; part of it is the timing -- but without those socks, this thing wouldn't have taken off like it did yesterday." (

2. Lanny Breuer:
Breuer said he has no idea who leaked the information about Berger. But he said the timing is suspicious -- coming "days before the 9/11 commission report comes out." (

3. David Gergen
I have known Sandy Berger for a long time ... He would never do anything to compromise the security of the United States." Mr. Gergen added, "it is suspicious" that word of the investigation emerged just as the September 11 commission is about to release its report, since "this investigation started months ago." (

4. William Jefferson Blythe Clinton
Former President Clinton -- who Berger served --- says the controversy has "interesting timing." (

I suppose I could be wrong, but it does seem odd that the Edgy One would be grousing about the timing of the public disclosure of the investigation rather than the monumentally HUGE implications of what the activity which has prompted the investigation. I wonder, what was more disturbing about the leaking of Democratic memos about judicial nominations to you: (1) that it showed clearly that the NAACP and the Dems were working in concert to manipulate the judicial system to skew results of cases and doing so based on race, or (2) that some evil Republican interns had found the memos on servers that the Democrats had not bothered to secure?

I wrote this last night and am disturbed none-the-less that I may sound like (gasp) George Stephanopolis, this Sandy Berger thing is bad, no doubt and will get the attention is warrants, but trust me, the timing is not a coincidence and will help distract full attention from a report that is critical of the administration. Nothing against Bush, every president does this kind of stuff.
