Hoover's Your Daddy.

Jobs Report Not Enough

96,000 new jobs were created in September, falling short of the roughly 125,000 to 200,000 needed to keep pace with growth in the workforce. The numbers aren't as bad as earlier this year, but they're not great. Enough to give Bush some solace and to give Kerry some ammunition.

Bush reaches a historic point today, joining Herbert Hoover as the only President to preside over a net loss of jobs during his four years in office. Roughly a deficit of 580,000.

Nonfarm payroll employment continued to trend upward in September, increasing by 96,000, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.4 percent, the Bureau ofLabor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Over the prior3 months, payroll employment rose by 103,000 on average. In September, modestjob gains occurred in a few service-providing industries.
